Find out sooner rather than later whether your parents and/or in-laws will be contributing towards the fund for the big day and then set out some realistic targets.

Make a list of the different elements of the day in order of importance, then work your budget out around that designating the largest portion of the funds to the items at the top of the list, such as the venue, photographer and the dress.

To give you a helping hand we have put together a budget guide that gives a rough average on what each element of a wedding will cost.

(These amounts are a guide for approximately 100 guests – actual costs will vary according to the size of guest list, number of attendants, length of wedding, when you get married and type and location of venue.

Extra costs

As with any event, there are always extra costs you should bear in mind. Many of these may have no relevance to your wedding but if you want to incorporate all or some of them, it may bump up your budget slightly.

– Insurance – that is both for the wedding and honeymoon

– Corkage fees

– Videographer and extra fees other suppliers may charge to be filmed by them

– Save-the-date cards and any other extra stationery

– Entertainment/fireworks

– First night accommodation – if it’s not included at the venue

– Marriage fees and licence – approx £350

Money-saving tips

No bride and groom want to start married life thousands of pounds in debt so if you need to cut a hefty chunk from the budget, here are a few helpful tips:

– Arrange the ceremony and reception to be in the same place

– Have a mid-week or off-peak wedding

– Think about getting hitched later on in the day

– Ask your attendants to pay some/all towards the cost of their outfits

– Be brutal with your guest list

– Bag a bargain at dress sample sales

– Book last minute deals

– Hire rather than buy

– Look for items such as thank you gifts in the sales
